Because the amygdala can react much faster than the ‘thinking brain’, this process is sometimes referred to as an amygdala ‘hi-jack’. This allows you to move quickly when you step out onto the street and you realize a car is coming. Hormones like epinephrine (adrenaline) are immediately released that flood your body. When it senses danger, it’s job is to shut off the thinking brain and revert to the emotional brain and memory to react. The Amygdala largely runs the sympathetic nervous system.
